University of Swat celebrated World Environment Day 2025 with a Call to End Plastic Pollution
The Department of Environmental and Conservation Sciences (DE&CS), in collaboration with the Green Youth Movement (GYM), celebrated World Environment Day on June 5, 2025, under the global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution.” The event aimed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of plastic waste on the environment, human health, and the global economy, while underscoring the need for immediate and collective action to reduce plastic dependency and shift towards sustainable alternatives.
The day’s activities commenced with an Awareness Walk, followed by a Cleanliness Drive across the university campus. The events drew significant participation from faculty members, administrative staff, and a large number of enthusiastic students, all united by a shared commitment to environmental protection.
During the event, the urgent need to phase out single-use plastics, adopt eco-friendly alternatives, and promote responsible consumption and waste management practices were highlighted. Students and participants were encouraged to become active agents of change, both within the university and in their communities, to combat the growing plastic crisis.
The DE&CS and GYM reaffirmed their dedication to ongoing environmental education, outreach, and sustainability initiatives, highlighting the leadership of Prof. Dr. Hassan Sher, Vice Chancellor of the University of Swat, as a proactive advocate for environmental stewardship and climate resilience.
