Press Release: Seminar on World Ozone Day 2024 Held at the University of Swat
September 16, 2024 – The University of Swat marked World Ozone Day 2024 by hosting a seminar today, bringing together environmental experts, students, and faculty members to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the ozone layer. The event was organized by the Youth Development Centre (YDC), UoS in collaboration with the Green Youth Movement, UoS.
The Vice-Chancellor, University of Swat (Prof. Dr. Hassan Sher, SAARC Gold Medalist) attended the event as Chief Guest. In his remarks, he emphasized the success of the Montreal Protocol and its impact on reducing ozone-depleting substances. Due to international cooperation, we’ve seen a significant recovery in the ozone layer, but the fight is far from over. Local action is critical to sustaining global progress. In addition, he stressed the role of students and faculty in creating sustainable solutions to environmental challenges.
Dr. Naveed Alam, Assistant Professor and In-Charge, Institute of Forest Sciences, University of Swat, delivered a talk on the role of the ozone layer in protecting life on earth and the importance of continued adherence to environmental treaties. He stated that we must integrate ozone protection strategies with broader environmental conservation efforts, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting clean energy.
The event was attended by students and faculty from different academic units including event organizer Dr. Imran (Assistant Professor of Sociology), In-Charge, Department of Social and Gender Studies, UoS and Focal Person, YDC, UoS, Dr. Faiz Muhammad Khan (Chairman, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, UoS), Dr. Nasir Ahmad (Centre for Education and Staff Training, UoS), Dr. Shazia (Lecturer in Botany, Centre for Plant Sciences & Biodiversity, UoS), Mr. Zahid Hussain (Lecturer in Pakistan Studies, UoS).
In his closing remarks, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Hassan Sher lauded the efforts of the organizers and participants. He encouraged students to take up leadership roles in environmental protection and research. He further highlighted that the University of Swat would continue to host initiatives aimed at educating and engaging the community on environmental issues.
