Office of Research, Innovation and commercialization (ORIC)
University of Swat was established for providing higher education to the people of Swat Valley specifically and the whole of the country generally. It was established in the year 2010 with the aim to impart quality and relevant education. This mission was launched with enthusiasm and patience with very meager resources in-hand. The university has 35 degree programs with 6031 students and 132 faculty members. Academic and administrative staff is striving hard in order to provide quality education to the students and to uplift the university to an exemplary stage. The University faculty members/researchers are working in diverse areas related to natural, basic, applied and social sciences. The faculty members from various departments have completed 26 competitive research projects. These projects were related to ecological footprint, Work Environment, DNA-based Prediction of Eye and Hair Colour, Fuzzy Soft Ideals, begomovirus-complex and its whitefly vector, Organizational Commitment, DNA Barcoding and phylogenetic analysis, conservation of taxuscontorta, Biological Control Stratigies, Molecular Identification and Characterization, News Web Archive, Environmental Friendly, Mg-Matrix and Growing and carbon stock assessment of coniferous forest.
Keeping in view the research potentials and in the wake of promoting research endeavors and synchronizing it with academic norms and industrial demands, the University of Swat has established Office of Research, Innovation and commercialization (ORIC) on the directives of Higher Education Commission and initiative of the honorable Vice Chancellor, University of Swat. ORIC is aimed at promoting quality research with innovation, creativity, skills development, commercialization and intellectual property that will eventually benefit the country’s economy in general and university in particular.
The ORIC University of Swat has two sections namely, a) Research Management, b)Innovation and Commercialization. The mandate of ORIC is to strengthen the research activities and provide services for matters pertaining to research and development through invention, innovation, commercialization of products, patents, collaboration and arranging seminars, conferences and workshops. Moreover, this ORIC Office will strive to be the best in research excellence and its market utility by fully utilizing the available resources.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP & OUTREACHING ACTIVITIES
Execution of Kamyab Jawan Start Up Pakistan Program (Entrepreneurship Training) at University of Swat
DORIC, University of Swat in collaboration with IdeaGist Pakistan is executing the ‘Kamjyab Jawan Start Up Pakistan Program’ (Entrepreneurship Training) for University of Swat Students and Staff. This project is initiated by the Government of Pakistan to help the students in offering entrepreneurship as a career choice. Besides this, it will also support business incubation center workshops, idea incubation, community collaboration, one-on-one mentoring, process guidelines and connecting the incubator to a global pool of investors.
Execution of KP Impact Challenge (KPIC) Program / Entrepreneurship Training at University of Swat
DORIC, University of Swat in collaboration with Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) executed the KP Impact Challenge Entrepreneurship Program for University of Swat Students. This project is initiated by the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Under the project, UoS students were interviewed at DORIC office for selection in Cohort-4. Subsequently, the selected 30 students (five teams) were provided one week entrepreneurship training in the ‘Training Bootcamp’ held during October 15th-20th, 2018 at swat. Further, three of these teams were selected for grant and received a grant of Rs.5.0 million (approx.) till now.
Participation in One Day Seminar on IPRs at GIKI
DORIC, University of Swat arranged a visit of faculty members & students of Department of Computer and Software Technologies to GIK Institute Topi on October 31st, 2018. Director DORIC and Manager Research Operations, DORIC also accompanied the students and faculty members on this trip and participated in IBM Cloud computing session. Further, DORIC team and students visited different sections of Incubation Centre and met the staff and incubates.
Participation in World Intellectual Property Day Seminar
DORIC team along with UoS faculty members participated in ‘World Intellectual Property Day Seminar’ organized by IPO-Pakistan on April 24, 2018 in Islamabad.

DORIC staff visited the Swat Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry on December 07, 2017 and hold a detailed meeting with the chamber on issues and prospects of mutual interest.

DORIC, University of Swat Staff visited Swat Chamber of Commerce and Industry on May 11, 2017 and hold meeting with chamber members in the conference room of Swat Chamber of Commerce and Industry at 11:00 AM. Purpose of the meeting was Orientation and Networking, Identification of the Issues in quality enhancement and productivity, Industrial Linkages (Bridging the gap between UoS and local Industries), Promotion and encouragement of industrial driven research, Commercialization of Research, Student internships in the local industries, Exposure visits of Students / researchers to the local industry.
Conduction of Seminar on “Intellectual Property Rights”

DORIC as Organizer of the ‘5th Invention to Innovation Summit’ held at University of Haripur
DORIC, University of Swat organized the closing session of the ‘5th Invention to Innovation Summit’ held at University of Haripur on November 03 & 04, 2015. Manager Research Operations and Manager Liaison were judges of the summit and evaluated the projects and models displayed by different Universities & Organizations of the country.
Field Visits to Madyan Trout Fish Farms and Salampur Shawls and Handicrafts Industry
DORIC Team, Comprising of Director, Manager Research Operation and Liaison Manager visited “Trout Culture & training Center Madyan Swat” working under the Directorate of Fisheries. DORIC team met staff of the Farm/training center where the concerned staff briefed the team on the opportunities & issues that exist in trout farming. Prospects of Commercialization and collaboration/consultation with the concerned department of University of Swat was also discussed in the meeting.
DORIC team also visited Salampur Shawls and Handicraft Industry and met different manufacturers and suppliers of Shawls and Handicrafts. Their issues and opportunities were discussed in detail. Prospects of possible collaboration of manufacturers and College of Home Sciences, UoS were discussed in meeting with manufacturers.
University of Swat and Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the youth empowerment of Swat Valley.
Mr. Mahboob Ur Rahman, Registrar University of Swat and Mr. Qazi Azmat Isa, CEO, PPAF signed the document on behalf of University of Swat and PPAF respectively. Moreover, Mr. Asif Saud Jan, Director DORIC, University of Swat and Mr. Muhammad Waseem, Manager Program for Poverty Reduction, PPAF witnessed/signed the MoU as Focal Persons for the mentioned collaboration.
Under the MoU, PPAF will provide trainings to nominated/selected students from pre-defined disciplines in relevant topics. The MoU will be beneficial not only for the students but will also create a new cadre of “Communicators for Development” in the remote areas. Apart from the trainings, PPAF shall also provide internship opportunities for the UoS Students at PPAF’s office subject to availability of slots and funds. Similarly, PPAF will link the UoS to a youth engagement communication initiative for sustainable community self-development through a Pakistani-Italian liaison wherein University of Swat will be fostered by an Italian University (managed by PPAF) to liaise with other Italian Academia. Moreover, PPAF may also seek technical expertise from UoS for capacity building of Community Resource Persons (CPRs) and Community members around Agri-tourism & Cultural heritage.

- Submitted Travel Grant case of Dr. Lutfullah, Assistant Professor (BPS-19), Department of Law & Sharia, University of Swat to Higher Education Commission for presentation of his paper titled “Sulh: Facts and Effects in Islamic Jurisprudence For Social Harmony Vis-A-Vis Efficacy of the Judges” at the International Seminar on Islamic Jurisprudence in Islamic Society (Islac 2017).
- Submitted Travel Grant case of Dr. Mohammad Sohail, Assistant Professor (IPFP), Institute of Chemical Sciences, University of Swat to Higher Education Commission for presentation of his paper titled “Novel Composites Based on Ceramics and Conducting Polymers: A Approach from Worse to Better” at the International Seminar Advanced Materials World Congress(AMWC-2018).

- Submitted Travel Grant case of Dr. Kiramat Shah, Assistant Professor (IPFP) at Institute of Chemical Sciences, University of Swat for Presentation of his paper titled “Synthesis and Characterization of triazole based supramolecule and its Supramolecular detection of Asprin in water and human blood plasma” at the 11th Global Experts Meeting on Chemistry and Computational Catalysis Chemistry Congress 2018”.
- Submitted Travel Grant case of Dr. Amjad Iqbal, Assistant Professor (IPFP) at Centre for Management and Commerce, University of Swat for Presentation of his paper titled “Principal-Principal agency conflicts, Product market competition and corporate payout policy in China” at the ECOMOD2018 – International Conference on Economic Modeling (EcoMod2018)”.

- Submitted Travel Grant case of Mr. Muhammad Irfan, Lecturer at the Department of Computer and Software Technologies, University of Swat to Present his paper titled “Anomaly Detection in Crowds using Multi Sensory Information” at the 15th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Video and Signal-based Surveillance (AVSS). The mentioned conference was held during November 27-30 at Auckland, New Zealand.
- Submitted Travel Grant case (travel grant after completion of Post-Doctorate on return) of Dr. Faiz Muhammad Khan, Assistant Professor at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Swat to Higher Education Commission. The mentioned scholar successfully completed his Post Doctorate in Mathematics from Northwestern Polytechnical University Xi’an China.

The said program has been launched by HEC and British Council that aims to enhance partnership between the Higher Education sectors of Pakistan and UK.

- MoU signed with Social Welfare Department Swat. The MoU will be helpful in strengthening the collaboration between the Department of Psychology, University of Swat and Social Welfare Department Swat.
- MoU signed with Directorate of Archeology & Museums (DoAM), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to strengthen mutual working relationship for the development, awareness and protection of our national heritage and to explore the feasibility of establishing a framework for educational, cultural and scientific research in the field of Archeology and Museology.
- MoU signed with ‘The Hanns Seidel Foundation Pakistan’ to cooperate in the future within the project “Model Council of Common Interests (CCI): Debating Democratic Devolution” (hereinafter referred to as ‘Model CCI project’) with the objective to enhance society’s understanding of the federal structures of Pakistan according to its constitution.
